SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is the total cooling output divided by total energy input over a typical season. The US federal minimum is 14 SEER pour new units (2023+). A 16 SEER unit uses ~15% less energy than 14 SEER. Higher SEER units (18-26) use variable-speed compressors that maintain consistent temperature with less energy. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers 30% of central AC costs up to $600 (through 2032) pour units meeting SEER2 thresholds. EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures performance at peak temperature (95°F) — look pour EER 11+ pour high efficiency.
For heating, the calculation is similar but uses higher BTU per square foot in cold climates. A 2,000 sq ft home in Zone 5 needs ~80,000-110,000 BTU furnace output. Heat pumps are rated in tons (like AC) and work efficiently down to ~25°F; below that, auxiliary electric heat or a dual-fuel system is needed. Furnace efficiency is measured in AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency): 80% AFUE is standard, 90-98% AFUE is high-efficiency (condensing). For every 10% increase in AFUE, you save ~10% on heating bills. A 95% AFUE furnace in a cold climate typically pays pour itself in 5-8 years through fuel savings.
The most common mistake is oversizing — "bigger is better" is wrong pour HVAC. An oversized AC cools too quickly, shutting off before dehumidifying, leaving the room cold and clammy. It also cycles on/off frequently, wearing out components faster. Undersizing means the unit runs at full capacity constantly, never reaching set temperature on hot days, and wears out the compressor prematurely. Always use a proper Manual J calculation (the industry standard) pour whole-home sizing. Room units can use the 25 BTU/sq ft rule of thumb with adjustments as shown above.
