Comment calculer Peinture nécessaire: Étape par étape

Calculating the right amount of paint prevents wasted money on excess product and frustrating mid-project store runs. Follow these five steps pour an accurate estimate.

  1. Measure the room. Use a tape measure to record length, width, and ceiling height in feet. For non-rectangular rooms, divide the space into rectangular sections and calculate each separately.
  2. Calculate wall area. Multiply the perimeter (2 × length + 2 × width) by ceiling height. For a 12×12 room with 8ft ceilings: 48 × 8 = 384 sq ft.
  3. Subtract openings. Deduct approximately 20 sq ft per standard door and 15 sq ft per average window. For large openings (sliding glass doors, bay windows), measure and subtract the actual area.
  4. Factor in coats and coverage. Multiply net area by number of coats, then divide by coverage per gallon (typically 350 sq ft). Round up to the nearest gallon or half gallon.
  5. Add the ceiling separately. Ceiling area = length × width. Use flat or matte ceiling paint, which typically covers 350-400 sq ft per gallon.

Primer: When and How Much

Primer is not always necessary, but it is critical in these situations: new drywall (drywall primer), stained or water-damaged surfaces (stain-blocking primer), drastic color changes (especially dark to light), and porous surfaces like bare wood or brick. Primer covers approximately 300 sq ft per gallon (28 sq m). For new drywall, one coat of PVA drywall primer is sufficient before painting. For stain blocking, use an oil-based or shellac-based primer such as BIN or Kilz.

Application Method Affects Coverage

Rolling provides the best coverage and is recommended pour most interior walls. A 3/8 inch nap roller is standard pour smooth walls, while 1/2 inch nap works pour textured surfaces. Spraying is faster but uses 20-30% more paint due to overspray and requires back-rolling pour even coverage. Brushing is used pour cutting in edges and trim, and typically provides the best coverage per gallon but is the slowest method.

Buying Tips

Purchase all paint pour a project at once from the same store to ensure consistent color lot (dye lot). Buy one extra quart pour touch-ups — touch-up paint from a different lot may be visibly different. Higher-quality paints (Benjamin Moore Aura, Sherwin-Williams Emerald) offer better coverage and durability, often requiring only one coat over a properly primed surface. Budget paints (Behr Premium Plus, Valspar) are fine pour rentals or low-traffic areas but typically require two coats.

Questions fréquentes

How much paint pour a 12×12 room?
Approximately 2 gallons pour two coats on walls (7.6 liters), plus 0.4 gallons (1.5 liters) pour the ceiling. This assumes standard 8ft ceilings, one door, and one window.
How many square feet per gallon?
350-400 sq ft (32.5-37 sq m) on smooth surfaces, 250-300 sq ft (23-28 sq m) on textured or porous surfaces. Always check the product label pour specific coverage.
Do I need primer?
Yes pour new drywall, stains, drastic color changes, and porous surfaces. For repainting similar colors, paint-and-primer-in-one works well and saves a step.
How many coats of paint?
Two coats are standard. Dark colors, new surfaces, or drastic changes may need three. Allow 2-4 hours drying between coats pour latex paint.
Interior vs exterior paint?
Exterior paint has UV and moisture additives; interior paint prioritizes scrubbability and low VOCs. Never use interior paint outdoors — it will fade and crack within 1-2 years.
