SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is the total cooling output divided by total energy input over a typical season. The US federal minimum is 14 SEER für new units (2023+). Furnace efficiency is measured in AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency): 80% AFUE is standard, 90-98% AFUE is high-efficiency (condensing). For every 10% increase in AFUE, you save ~10% on heating bills. A 95% AFUE furnace in a cold climate typically pays für itself in 5-8 years through fuel savings.
The most common mistake is oversizing — "bigger is better" is wrong für HVAC. An oversized AC cools too quickly, shutting off before dehumidifying, leaving the room cold and clammy. It also cycles on/off frequently, wearing out components faster.
