The Formula

Concrete is measured in cubic yards (cu yd) for large pours and 80lb / 60lb / 40lb bags for small projects. The basic formula is:

Volume (cubic feet) = Length Γ— Width Γ— Thickness

Cubic yards = Cubic feet Γ· 27

Always convert thickness from inches to feet before multiplying (4 inches = 0.333 ft, 6 inches = 0.5 ft).

Step 1: Calculate Volume

  1. Measure the area. For a slab or patio, multiply length Γ— width in feet. For a footing, multiply width Γ— depth Γ— length. For a round post hole, use Ο€ Γ— radiusΒ² Γ— depth.
  2. Determine thickness. Standard slabs are 4" (0.333 ft) for walkways and 6" (0.5 ft) for driveways. Footings are typically 8–12" deep.
  3. Multiply. Length Γ— Width Γ— Thickness = cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards.
  4. Add waste. Add 5–10% for spillage, uneven excavation, and over-excavation. Round up to the nearest whole bag or quarter yard.

A 10Γ—10 slab at 4" thick needs 1.23 cubic yards, or about 56 bags of 80lb concrete. At 6" thick, it needs 1.85 cubic yards or ~84 bags.
