Estimate flooring boxes, waste factor and total cost in square feet or square meters for any room.
Getting the right amount of flooring prevents costly mid-project delays and ensures you get matching material from the same production lot. Follow these steps for an accurate estimate.

Before installation, flooring must acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity for 48-72 hours. This prevents gaps, buckling, or cupping after installation. Stack boxes with spacers between layers to allow air circulation. Maintain room temperature between 60-80ยฐF (15-27ยฐC) and humidity between 35-65%. Engineered hardwood and laminate are particularly sensitive to moisture changes. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is more dimensionally stable but still benefits from 24 hours of acclimation.
The quality of your subfloor directly affects the finished floor. Subfloors must be clean, dry, and flat within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span. Use a leveling compound for low spots and sand high spots. For concrete subfloors, always use a moisture barrier โ even if the flooring says "attached underlayment." Test concrete moisture with a calcium chloride test or RH probe before installing. Plywood subfloors should be at least 5/8 inch thick and screwed (not nailed) to prevent squeaks.
Purchase all flooring at once from the same store to ensure matching dye lot and production run. Keep unopened boxes โ most retailers accept returns within 30-90 days. Store extra boxes in a climate-controlled area for future repairs; a damaged plank from a different lot will be visibly different. For high-traffic areas, consider a higher wear rating (AC4/AC5 for laminate, 20+ mil wear layer for LVP). Budget an additional 5-10% for transition strips, quarter round, and adhesive.
